Sexual Harassment in Czech education system

Abstract

The chapter focuses on the question of proper and improper behavior of teachers towards students in high schools. Based on a survey of 1,237 students, we show what types of teacher behavior that can be characterized as sexual harassment are considered unpleasant by students and what their incidence is.

A part of the survey instrument was inspired by the SEQ (Sexual Experience Questionnaire), which let us compare Czech results with those foreign research findings. The comparison reveals about the same incidence of sexual harassment in Czech high schools, but much lower student sensitivity about its improperness.

Czech students are much more tolerant towards teacher behavior which can be characterized as sexual harassment. Girls are much more critical than boys and students' critical distance depends on a concrete context.
