The Tasks of the University

Abstract

In this classic text, Karl Jaspers inquires into the substance of the university. He stresses the interconnectedness of research and teaching and turns to the work of the researcher and the student as well.

The life of the university is in Jaspers' conception fully subordinated to the idea: the idea is such a being that induces the researcher to loosen the grip of all finite phenomena while at the same time enlivening and uniting all of these.
