Abstract
The new Czech Civil Code introduced several important changes regarding many issues from the area of environmental protection. However, one of the most discussed issues is the new legal status of animals since they are not considered as things anymore.
They fall within a specific category that needs to be treated differently and with special regards. Even though it might seem that this legal shift is only theoretical or ideological, exactly the opposite is right.
Owners of the animals are also influenced by this shift (legal responsibility, damage caused by the animal etc.).
