This paper aims to display the most significant feature of Proust's thinking of time consisting in a specific connection between the time as a concrete lived quality and the extra-temporal qualitative difference or essence. The time in its most concrete realizations, as Proust makes it clear, is always a particular kind of "emanation" of the extra-temporal reality, which is likewise the final goal of the quest of the hero and the source of the creative process manifested in the novel.
This non-temporal essence itself however remains hidden up to the very end of the novel.
