An Attempt to Enhance Women's Political Representation in the Czech Republic: Caught Between Theories and Lack of Interest

Publication at Faculty of Law |

Abstract

For nearly a decade, the issue of greater proportional representation has repeatedly emerged at various political levels; however, it has not even been debated in the Parliament of the Czech Republic. This article summarises the main objections to the proposed legislative quotas, legal as well as historical and political, and questions their weight or relevance.

The reason for the current low representation of women in politics might therefore be hidden deeper in society's attitudes to parity claims and in the lack of substantial external pressure (especially from the international community or European Union).
