The Image of France and the French Civilization in the History Books for High Schools in the Interwar Period in Hungary

Abstract

The chapter looks at the complex case of the representation of French civilization in Hungarian history textbooks for high schools during the interwar period. In particular, the analysis tries to assess how far the experience of Trianon and resentment against the French role in the making of the interwar order affected the image of France and French civilization in the historical representations conveyed to the high school students.

The study concludes that despite negative overtones in tracting the recent history, historical connections between Hungary and France remained positively represented, serving as a clear argument for Hungary's belonging to Europe and Western civilization.
