In the paper we research the idea of Central Europe in the literary essays of Sloven writer Drago Jančar. Drago Jančar first - in the eighties - interpreted the idea of Central Europe as a collective cultural space and a place of freedom against all ideologies, especially socialistic -totalitarian ones.
In the nineties he began to accent just the historical context of this idea: he underlined the historically productive coexistence of different culture in the Austro-Hungarian Empire in the beginning of 20 the Century.
