Expansion, massification and access to higher education in Slovakia

Publication |
2015

Abstract

The publication discusses a significant transformation of higher education in Slovakia and the related consequences. During 90s of the last century and the first decade of the 21st century Slovak higher education went through a significant expansion which led to its massification.

The publication not only describes and analyzes these dramatic changes but also examines their impact on the relationship between social background and access to higher education. Finally, the publication addresses the question of whether in Slovakia the massification of higher education was accompanied by a corresponding qualitative growth.

More and more young Slovaks are choosing to study higher education abroad and especially in the Czech Republic. It is estimated that only about a half of them returns to Slovakia.

This leads to the so-called brain drain or in other words to an emigration of well-educated and skilled individuals.
