Abstract

The Good Hope (1900) by Herman Heijermans was translated at least three times into Czech and staged at least by eleven theatre companies (between 1901 and 1973): of which three stagings took place during the existence of the socialist Czechoslovakia (in 1948, 1956 en 1973). In my talk I discussed to what extent the available reviews of the play reflected the socialist and communist ideology and to what extent the other aspects (the esthetic quality of the text and the quality of the staging) were taken into account.
