The Ústí region together with the German state of Saxony have been linked with one another though their long-term close cooperation in various areas of industrial, cultural, and public life. This cooperation has deepened further since the Czech Republic joined the European Union and since the mutual border has been dismantled after our country's joining of the Schengen space.
As part of the cooperation, a new textbook has been published for the Ústí region and Saxony, put forward by a co authoring team of scientists and teachers from the Jan Evangelista Purkyně University in Ústí nad Labem and the Technical University of Dresden. There are two language versions (Sächsisch-Böhmische Beziehungen im Wandel der Zeit.
Essays; Česko-saské vztahy v proměnách času. Odborné texty) accompanied by a methodological manual for teachers about the historical and methodological background of its conception.
This book's primary purpose is to serve as a supplement to the curricula of history and social science subjects as well as lessons of German and Czech language and literature at secondary schools in the Ústí region and Saxony. The joint Ústí-Dresden effort is remarkable in the way it captures the shared history of the border region.
What is more, it is also very much needed, especially as part of the education programme.
