Neural correlates of a prediction error, particularly the mismatch negativity (MMN), are connected to attenuation of a response to repeated stimuli. O'Shea, R.

P. (2015, Front. Hum.

Neurosci. 9:38) identifies this attenuation as adaptation and argues that it should replace the refractoriness originally used in the field of MMN research. The article is pointing at a historical context of the refractoriness use and suggests computational modeling as the best approach for unification of terminology and comprehension of mechanisms underlying the response suppression.
