Abstract

The introduction describes how a physicalist conception of the mind is subject to growing doubt in the analytical tradition. Even if it is clear that physicalism remaims a widespread and influential position, in the last decades attention has been given to some significant objections to the very idea of a physicalist reduction.

Some philosophers who have presented these objections, such as Galen Strawson, still understand their theory as physicalist in a revised---some might say, idiosyncratic---sense. Others, such as Noam Chomsky and his followers, find this label quite vacuous.

An explicitly critical approach to physicalism is adopted in contemporary philosophy by, above all, David Chalmers. The aim of our volume is to provide the Czech reader with some key essays in the phlosophy of mind.
