The creation of images, symbols, icons and cults, is natural for the whole humanity. The formation of ideals and delimitation of our proper paper in the world, is not a modern phenomenon, but it applies also on the colonial period under the Spanish rule.

The novel "Immortality" by Milan Kundera, published in 1988, presents for the first time the term "imagology" as a sustitute for the already surpassed ideology. Since its publication, various academics dedicated their study to imagology in the field of sociological, philosophical or theological analysis.

Imagology found its place also at comparative literature and semiotics (as e.g. at Tzvetan Todorov's "La conquista de América, la cuestión del otro", from 1982). However, the purpose of this paper is to analyze the possible application of imagology as methodology for the study of historical circumstances of the Spanish-Dutch relations in the Caribbean.

And even when imagology offers interesting points of view on the problematic, the text offers many doubts, while the biggest one is "is it possible to apply imagology in a really scientific way on the colonial sources of the 17th century?".
