Abstract

The chapter focuses on first ten years of the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival in Czechoslovakia. It explores the changing roles that the festival played vis-a-vis the Czechoslovak government's foreign and domestic policy, vis-a-vis recasting of Czechoslovak national identity, and vis-a-vis global economic, cultural, and political ambitions of the Soviet Union and the Soviet film industry.
