Abstract
The article examines the aesthetic tendencies and translational approaches of two main Czech translators of John Donne, Hana Žantovská and Zdeněk Hron, on the textual material of Donne's "Epithalamion Made at Lincoln's Inn". This epithalamion is an early example of the heterogeneity of Donne's poetry: it contains elements of satire or lasciviousness that are at odds with the otherwise largely conventional tone of the poem.
The analysis of the two Czech translations shows that the translators approach these incongruities in a markedly different manner and sheds light on certain more general tendencies in their treatment of Donne's poetry, namely emphasis on logical, emotional and stylistic coherence of the whole in one case, and cultivation of idiosyncratic detail in the other.
