Abstract
This study analyzes the overall situation in Croatia at the beginning of the year 1989. Internal political and social events are included in the overall context of the Yugoslav crisis, which was dramatizing at the beginning of 1989.
The author defines the basic priorities and opinions of the high Croatian power elite in this period. The basic contours of Croatian so called ""politics of silence"", how attitude of the Croatian communists after 1971 was called, are exemplified by the most important events of January 1989.
This study is based on an analysis of the major Croatian periodicals and still meagre secondary literature.
