Portable Altar and the English Nobility of the 13th and 14th Century

Abstract

The paper deals with the topic of the use of portable altars in the noble spirituality and noble representation in 13th and 14th century England. At first the paper describes possible uses of the portable altar and review the terminology connected with it.

Further it describes the situation of the middle 14th century, when a number of noble request for the use of portable altar were granted, mostly in connection with a residence abroad or a military campaign. Finaly the paper analyses the socio-political reasons, with roots a century earlier, which led to the increased atractivity of the ownership of a personal altar for English noblemen not only for sake of their prestige, but also for sake of their spirituality.
