Simulations of Space Charge Effect on Ion Sensitive Probes

Abstract

Simulations of ion sensitive probes I-V characteristics are presented to evaluate the deteriorating role of space charge, as suggested by Brunner et al. [2013]. The problem was simulated by means of 3D3V particle-in-cell code SPICE3.

A scan in plasma density between 1 x 10E+17 and 2 x 10E+18 m^(-3) as well as multiple geometries and temperatures were investigated. Characteristics taken from these runs suggest that the analysis of ion sensitive probe measurements is a valid source of ion temperature at least for smaller densities.
