Practical science of Religion: The approach of Udo Tworuschka

Publication at Hussite Theological Faculty |
2015

Abstract

The Practical science of religion presents an original concept of the discipline which combines inspiration from the field of academic study of religions with confessional religious education, (constructivist) pedagogy and many other scholarly perspectives which emphasize focusing on specific actors and contexts. I have divided the objectives to be fulfilled by the Practical science of religion into six types:

1) Reflection and analysis of religion,

2) Mediation of knowledge, educational activities,

3) Criticism of religion,

4) Educational function,

5) Creation of knowledge for practice and

6) Conflict solution, mediating practice. The article concludes with a few critical remarks. It is not clear how Tworuschka copes with the problem of values and with engaged practice of any scientific discipline. His arguments regarding the status of Practical science of religion are ambiguous.
