Inequalities within society (such as the lack of a proper job or bad living conditions for significant part of people) are usually seen as one of the main push factors that force people migrate and this even more at the times when the inequalities in the society rise. From this point of view, (e)migration become more or less popular social reaction to inequalities.

At the same time, new social inequalities and problems can arise as results of migration in both sending and receiving countries. Among them, most common are the ones in the domain of family life of migrants (as their children turn into "migrant orphans"), of working conditions (not so good for most of migrants), of career prospects (usually none), of evaluation of migration experience in the case of return of the migrant to the home country (underevaluated or even not taken in account at all) or of lack of workforce for low paid jobs in the country of origin of migrants.

All this, and particularly the experience of countries in the region of Central and Eastern Europe, inspired the editors of the book to organise a workshop dealing with these issues in 2009 in Poznan (Poland). The papers presented out there served as basis for this book and the Polish experience filled most of the chapters.
