The study shows the reception and interpretation of Hašek's Adventures of the Good Soldier Švejk in the Great War in the 1920s to the 1940s, espacially. A multifaceted typology of ""Švejks"" was established in the current criticism, journalism and polemics; it did not take long for the concepts of ""Švejkery"", ""Švejkianism"" and ""Švejking"" to come up and go through modifications.
The arguments and counter-arguments that can be followed in the reception of Hašek's novel were linked to the shifts in the current social and literary circumstances, to issues of national and transnational character of art, the intellectual and ideological rejection or appropriation of the work, optimism or negativism etc.
