A Dialogue between the Priest and the Deer

Publication at Faculty of Arts |
2015

Abstract

The contribution deals with a hitherto unknown Tibetan myth containing a dialogue between the priest Phaba (Sku gshen Pha ba) and a deer. The opening part of the text consists of a charter myth on origin of the world, division of lands among gods, demons and people.

The original man kills many animals of demons and thus it is decided that a deer should serve a ransom offering. Following the long dialog between the priest and the deer, the deer is led to the thirteenth layer of sky.

This part contains unique description of the different spheres of the world. The deer is said to obtain his antlers from camel and this detail repeats Central Asian motif known from Mongolian and Tuvan tales as well as from ancient petroglyphs.
