Credo settings in cantus fractus in Bohemian sources. A preliminary report on a neglected ars nova repertory

Abstract

Browsing through the graduals of the Bohemian Utraquists originating from the 1470s onwards, one might be a little surprised by the consistent absence of traditional plainchant Credos within the collection of Mass ordinary chants. Insteadof that, the Utraquist manuscripts transmit numerous cantus fractus settings of this liturgical text, which have not excited any special scholarly interest until now, staying outside the main focus of chant specialists as well as musicologists studying mensural polyphony.
