An Equal Start? Unequal chances in preschool education and in the transition to primary school

Abstract

The book emphisazes the equity and inequal chances in preschool education and in transition to compulsory school. Inequalities in education have been widely studied in the Czech republic, however only in later stages of education.

Early years and its importance in overcoming various disadvantages is largely documented in sociological and educational literature and the rate of returns to education has been proved the highest in early years. This book aims to uncover and point to various mechanisms of inequaliites in Czech education system.

For this purpose we have utilized and analzed data from longitudinal study CLoSE (Czech Longitudinal Study of Education) which forms the main part of analysis and arguments in this book. However another data are also used, including data from Roma Education Survey, national statistics etc.

This book brings equity issues in early years and based on the findings also provides recommendation for policy makers in the Czech republic.
