Abstract

The study focuses on biographies of missionaries of the renewed Jednota bratrská that represent a so far neglected resource of brotherly origin. Biographies need to be seen as informative character resources to serve as a certain type of communication of a worldwide unity.

Biographies should be examples of a good life and good death for the followers of the Moravian Church. Resources record unusual attitude of the church to an individual and also the role of an individual within the renewed Jednota bratrská.

The study focuses on biographies of missionaries on a more general level, i.e. as a means of the formation and strengthening common identity within the church, and also on a particular biography of Brother Johann Adolf Küster demonstrating the life of an ordinary missionary disseminating the ideas of the renewed Jednota bratrská at the break of the 18th and 19th centuries. The contribution tries to inform about unusual character of the mentioned resource and about the surprising lack of interest of the contemporary Czech historiography in resources originated in the renewed Jednota bratrská in a wider context.
