Delimitation of functional regions i.e. regions based on spatial interactions (flows) is a common task in human geography. This article demonstrates the possibilities of using GIS in this area, including discussion about some relevant problems and presents those on a complex implementation of the delimitation method, based on the approach of M.
Hampl combined with some elements of other methods, in the ArcPy environment as a toolbox for ArcGIS 10. The results are illustrated on an example of the Czech dataset from the 2011 census.
It is shown that GIS can solve the delimitation task more effectively and open new opportunities thanks to easier access to the geometry of spatial data.
