Through the Mythical Dolpo to the Crystal Mountain

Publication at Faculty of Arts |
2015

Abstract

The article introduces the remote and unusual region of Dolpo in the Himalayas of Nepal, which still maintains its own language, ancient traditions and customs as well as lineages of religious masters independent of those found in Tibet. The article mainly focuses on the daily life of the Dolpo people, the traditional and illegal sum-mer yak caravan trade on the Nepali-Chinese border with Tibetans living in contem-porary PRC, and then on the festive events preceding the most important celebrati-on of the region, the pilgrimage to the sacred Shelri Crystal Mountain taking place only once in twelve years (the last in 2012).
