Abstract

What means monumental? What can be described by this adjective can be shown very clearly by an analysis of these particular buildings which are considered as monumental structures. A prominent agent of this type is the Monument to the Battle of the Nations in Leipzig, Germany.

This essay develops a new perspective towards the monumentality of the monument by using a phenomenological approach to make it speak for itself. It will be shown that this monument is one that doesn't want to be monumental, showing this by its techniques of Vertigo and Emptiness.

The difficulties which holds this memorial are not only accidental but fundamental for it: it is to be considered firstly as a difficult monument.
