This chapter is an overview of the section that follows, dealing with mucosal vaccines against bacterial and viral infections of the gastrointestinal and respiratory tracts and the mouth and infections of veterinary importance. Various strategies have been developed for enhancing mucosal immunization through the use of adjuvants, delivery systems, bacterial or viral vectors, DNA vaccines, and vaccines produced in edible plants.
Passive immunization and systemic vaccination against mucosal infections are also discussed.
