Mitral valve replacement in the complete form of atrio-ventricular septal defect in infancy

Abstract

A five day old female newborn was diagnosed to have a complete form of atrio-ventricular septal defect, mitral insufficiency, stenosis of the left ventricular outflow tract and pulmonary hypertension. At the age of two months, the patient underwent surgical repair including supra-annular mechanical mitral valve replacement for significant residual mitral regurgitation.

In later life the valve prosthesis had to be replaced twice for stenosis. The case report documents complex problems associated with mitral valve replacement in infancy.
