From Iberian Romani to Iberian Para-Romani: a Morphological Perspective

Publication at Faculty of Arts |
2013

Abstract

The lecture deals with the morphological development of Iberian Para-Romani varieties (esp. Spanish Calo) from the original inflectional Romani.

It is based on an extensive language material dated between the 17th and 21st centuries. It focuses on selected morphological categories (nominal inflection, verbal inflection, pronominal inflection, way of adaptation of loanwords from the majority language), their gradual disruption and transition to the inflection of the majority language.

These changes are primarily result of language contact but also show some similarities that can match the general principles of language development. Finally, we will try to outline the basis of this transformation and characterize the main phases of development of Iberian Para-Romani varieties.
