Abstract

The chapter deals with the fresco decoration of Mattei Chapel in the Roman church S. Maria della Consolazione, produced 1553-1556 by Taddeo Zuccari (1529-1566).

Several preparatory drawings pertaining to this fresco have been preserved. The text focuses not only on the preparatory drawing of St Luke the Evangelist from Kroměříž Castle, but also on the sketches and designs of Sibyls figures presented in the lunettes above the altar in the Mattei Chapel.

To the studies of Sibyls from various collections (J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles, Art Institute in Chicago, British Museum or Kunsthalle in Hamburg) another one has been added.

Although the drawing introduced in this chapter was already published as Taddeo Zuccari's work, it was identified as a preparatory study to a completely different work.
