Insulin sensitivity describes the insulin action in the target tissues. It is in the inversion relationship to insulin secretion and their imbalance may induce changes in the glucose metabolism which are sometimes accompanied by clinical symptoms.
Hypoglycemia on one side and prediabetes or diabetes on other side may be developed. However, a decrease of the insulin sensitivity associated with an increased insulin secretion has not to be followed by changes of glycemia because a sufficient secretion equilibrates the impaired insulin action.
Correct interpretation of the relationship between the insulin secretion and its action may help to the selection of reliable treatment. In this overveiw their are described the main examples of changes between the insulin secretion and the insulin action.
