The aim of the UNESCO Memory of the World Programme is to safeguard the world documentary heritage and it allows nominating unique written documents including cartographic heritage. The main critera is the uniqueness of the documentary item for the nation or for the world.
It can be either one document or a collection. The inscription on the Register takes place every two years.
