Vegetables and fruit in the diet of our young children

Abstract

We present the results of Czech multicentric study concerning vegetables and fruits consumption of 832 children aged 6-35 months divided into four age groups. Three-day dietary records were evaluated.

Vegetables and fruits were given to almost all children during the three recorded days; the average vegetables consumption has increased insignificantly with age from 35.2 (s.d. 20.5) g/day in infants to 43.4 (s.d. 23.3) g/day in the oldest age group; the average consumption of fruits decreased from 122.7 (s.d. 56.1) g/day in infants to 97.0 (s.d. 43.3) g/day in the oldest children. Most children received potatoes, carrots and one other vegetable and apples, bananas, and one other fruit.

The amount of vegetables consumed was unsatisfactory especially in toddlers and the variety of both, vegetables and fruits was poor.
