Abstract

This book, entitled Coming Back: Post-War Reconstruction of Jewish Communities in the Countries of Central, Southeast and Eastern Europe, problematizes the often neglected question of Jews returning home when there was no home to return to after 1945. Individual chapters included here are based on autobiographical accounts of Holocaust survivors, recorded in the Visual History Archive USC Shoah Foundation.

Memories of those who survived racial persecution dur-ing the Second World War in hiding, concentration and extermination camps, or under a false identity and who returned home after the war, although this designation lost its original meaning for many, represent a crucial source of our analysis.
