Pelvic floor disorders such as perineal pain, urinary and anal incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse or sexual disorders represent relatively frequent consequences of a delivery. In the course of pregnancy and during the delivery the integrity and innervation of the pelvic floor may be compromised.
This results in an increase in the urogenital hiatus dimensions, decrease in pelvicfloor muscles contractility and impairment of the sensation and function of pelvic organs. The development of the given disorder is always multifactorial.
Despite the mode of delivery plays an important role, it is not decisive for the development of the disorder. The prevalences of the disorders in elderly are usually not dependant on the mode of delivery.
The protective effect of the caesarean section is frequently overestimated. Based on published studies it is not possible to recommend performing caesarean section for prevention of the pelvic floor disorders.
However, replacement of forceps with vacuum extraction where possible can certainly be recommended.
