The Dead Heart of Central Asia

Abstract

Imprudent management of water resources in Central Asia has caused the demise of the Aral Sea. Both of the large rivers Amu Darya and Syr Darya terminate much of the year in wastelands.

The uncovered bottom of the Aral Sea contains large emounts of salt, waste and disease-carrying germs. The wind carries these uncovered remnants far into the surrounding areas.

Most inhabitans of Karapalkastan suffer from some form of cancer of other serious illness. Future: water is a raw materiál.
