Abstract

Celiac disease is an autoimmune condition that can occur in genetically predisposed children where the ingestion of gluten leads to damage in the small intestine mucosa. There may be various clinical symptoms, specific serological blood antibody tests, seven HLA-DQ variants (DQ2 and DQ4-DQ9) and pathology changes in the small bowel (enteropathy).

Currently, the only treatment for celiac disease is lifelong adherence to a strict gluten-free diet.
