Paradoxical insomnia and its causes

Publication |
2015

Abstract

Insomnia is one of the most common sleep disorders. The diagnosis is based on patient's subjective statement.

The objective findings of sleep architecture in insomnia are not uniform. These patients often show the discrepancy between subjective and objective evaluation of sleep.

The cause of the above-described sleep state misperception is not fully known. It is assumed that both psychological and somatic factors play an important role in its development.

The aim of this article is to summarize current knowledge and to contribute to the understanding of this phenomenon. Studying the difference between subjective and objective evaluation of sleep has clinical, theoretical and public health importance.

Recent studies have shown that sleep state misperception may be a risk factor in the development of anxiety and insomnia with serious objective sleep deficit. Understanding the causes may improve the treatment of one of the common health problems.
