Abstract
This paper deals with the etymology of the expression 'rural backyard' and explains its ecological and technical functions in the process. A qualitative research method has been applied to explain the multifunctional aspect of the rural backyards - a specific plate yet gradually disappearing from the Czech countryside.
The study shows that the rural backyards still have an important role in the lives of local inhabitants and as such should become an object of further studies.
