Unstable Ukraine: Cultural, Economic and Political Divisions

Publication at Faculty of Science |
2016

Abstract

This article explores the territorial development of Ukraine from the Sixteenth to the Twentieth Centuries and its impact on the current structure of Ukrainian society. In particular, it focuses on determining factors behind the country's current cultural and socio-economic structures.

In other words, the article examines divisions between these determining factors and the historical development of Ukraine along the borderlands between Orthodox and later Communist Russia and Catholic and culturally modern Central Europe. It sheds light on the relationship between these divisions and Ukraine's current political structure and the dangers of Russia using these divisions to forward its own geopolitical objectives.
