Abstract

This study concentrates on the personality of František Stulík, a townsman and merchant who lived 1818-1890 in Budějovice. In the literature, he is mentioned primarily as a pioneer of the South Bohemian archeology.

The study attempts to show a broader spectrum of his cultural activity, especially in the field of collecting and conservation of historical monuments in Budějovice. One of the first in Budějovice Stulík tried to emphasize the importance of historic preservation for the national society.

In the second half of the 19th century, he became a prominent figure of the social life in the town, was a member of many cultural clubs (e.g. Beseda or Sokol) and supported the local Czech national movement.

All his life he was interested in history of his native region and maintained contacts with the representatives of the Patriotic Museum and the Archeological Society in Prague. Also these aspects are reflected in the study.
