The presentation is focused on the image of the Jewish quarter in the expressionist film Der Golem (1920). The oblique gothic houses are interpreted from two different, yet overlapping perspectives.
The first one is the genre of gothic horror which uses the animation of architecture to create a sensation of fear. The second one are the contemporary theories of W.
Worringer which seek the animation in the gothic style itself. The scary animation of architecture in Der Golem can explain the influence of expressionist films on the horror movies of Universal studio.
