Tuoni's eternal homeland - forms of funerary culture of the early modern era in Finland: Selected examples from the Cathedral in Turku.

Abstract

The article discusses the funerary culture of the early modern era in Finland on the example of the cathedral in city of Turku (Åbo). Introduction briefly summarizes the Finnish history, tracing the development of the burial rite as a result of the growth of urban centers, cultural influences of neighboring peoples and Christianisation.

The text eventually focuses on the center of the Finnish Christianism, the Cathedral of Turku, presentintg its burial monuments. These are mainly monuments of officers of the Swedish king Gustav II.

Adolf. The last mentioned tomb is a tomb of queen Karin Månsdotter, which was transferred to its present location in the 1876.
