Women in local politics : negotiations and resistances

Publication at Faculty of Arts |
2015

Abstract

In contrast with most countries in the world, in Turkey, female politicians are less represented at the local level and more represented at the national level. It is also noteworthy that the study of women's local political participation was for a long time neglected by Turkish academia.

The presentation that takes place on December 9th 2015 focuses on the arrangements (and their practical impact) adopted by four major political parties in Turkey that aim at increasing female political participation. The presentation then goes on to show the strategies that women politicians use in order to strengthen their position as well as limits that they face.

The work is based on the interviews that took place in cities of Diyarbakır, Trabzon and Izmir in Spring 2015.
