Abstract

The paper discusses the topic of literal aspects of multilingualism in the so called transfer literature. The analysis focuses on two novels (Peníze od Hitlera by R.

Denemarková and Vyhnání Gerty Schnirch by K. Tučková), taking into account also comparison with the novel Engste Heimat by E.

Pedretti. First and foremost, multilingualism is used as a means of characters' portrayal, however, it is also used to depict the setting and its changes.

Multilingual discourse has the potential to illustrate social and political changes of the Czech society in the last seventy years, as shown by selected examples. There is a variety of the narrator's and the characters' attitudes towards both languages - Czech and German -, which reflects the complexity of the transfer of Germans.

The most important feature of multilingual discourse is stressing the incomprehensibility of communication, not only on the basic level of understanding the language, but also on the higher level, showing failure of interpersonal communication as such.
