Between human and insect : Different approaches toward transformation in Kafka's The Metamorphosis and Cronenberg's The Fly

Abstract

The lecture compares two different artistic approaches toward the transformation of a human into a fly. Franz Kafka described Gregor Samsa in the story The Metamorphosis vaguely and he did not want illustrators to depict this character.

On the contrary, David Cronenberg based his film The Fly on realistic make-up and prosthetics which capture the transformation in disgusting details.
