Abstrakt
In my paper, I focus on pieces of art, which served as an instruments of commemoration in state socialist Czechoslovakia. I compare official memorials (monuments built in the style of socialist realism) with other pieces of art, which can be also described as objects of memory (historical paintings, statues in public space etc.).
Artifacts of both categories were declared as cultural heritage, but were they part of the same memory? What sort of memory was being mediated through these different pieces of art? What kind of dynamics had the meaning ascribed to these pieces of art during the communist era?
