Czech Translators of Dostoevsky's novel The Brothers Karamazov

Publication at Faculty of Arts |
2016

Abstract

Dostoevsky's novel The Brothers Karamazov was translated into Czech six times. The first was published in 1894, fourteen years after the original, and the last appeared in book stores in 2013.

The aim of these papers was to introduce all six translators (J. Hrubý, S.

Minařík, V. Ryba, B.

Hůla, P. Voskovec, L.

Dvořák), describe the circumstances in which the work was published; and learn about how time, social status and experience affected each of these translators' work.
